Sheriff's Police advise about scam calls ...

Law enforcement authorities are announcing an end-of-year scam that the public needs to be re-educated about – AGAIN.  Police will never ask for cash to resolve any kind of matter. Several area reports have surfaced in recent days where a caller informs someone about an arrest warrant and the matter can be resolved with a cash payment.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office wants citizens to know that if authorities have a warrant for your arrest, they will never ask you for cash.  If the caller leaves a message and the person calls back, the number appears to be the sheriff’s number.

“As a general rule, residents should be very cautious about giving financial or banking information to anyone over the phone unless their true identity and purpose can be verified independently,” sources say.

We’ve also issued a warning from the Bankers Association --- ‘Banks Never Ask for such Information.’ If you receive such call, just call your own bank to verify. They too NEVER INITIATE SUCH CALLS IN THAT MANNER.

If you suspect a questionable call, hang up, look up the phone number for the agency and call it back.
