State Ag Director talks to Kankakee County about Emergency Declaration

It could be a precedent-setting thing for Illinois. Kankakee County’s Ag Disaster Declaration is getting the attention of state officials.

Illinois Ag Director John Sullivan contacted Kankakee County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Chad Gessner to discuss the county’s declaration. The state has never before declared an ag-disaster and Kankakee County’s action (last Friday) has other counties paying attention.

County Board Chairman Andy Wheeler said the abundant amount of rain has taken a toll on the economy locally. He questions why the impact on the farm economy can’t get the same attention as other disasters?

“That’s the question. Flooding of rivers and streams and tornadoes bring disaster help. Oher resources come from outside the local area,” Wheeler said. “Why not farm disasters like this ? This is a serious situation that really effects the local economy.”

Chairman Wheeler’s declaration has the support of area representatives and senators. Their support prompted Ag Director Sullivan to contact Kankakee County.
