Suspicious person report leads to arrest of Watseka man

Watseka Police report the arrest of 22-year-old Isiah Nelson after officers responded to a suspicious person report about 10:15 Tuesday night. A citizen report about an occupied vehicle in a parking lot for over an hour led to officers smelling burnt cannabis and then finding a passenger in the vehicle with a handgun on his waist.

The man was ordered to step out of the vehicle but he refused. Nelson was arrested and charged with 2-counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting an officer and for bringing contraband into the jail. That last charge was because officers located small bag of suspected cannabis in the backseat of the squad car.

Police later determined the gun was a BB gun that closely resembled a .357. Nelson was also found to have a switchblade in his possession. A computer check then revealed Nelson was also wanted in Cook County for a felon in possession of a weapon.

Nelson was jailed in Iroquois County.
