The Illinois Department of Revenue has announced it collected nearly $240 million dollars through a tax amnesty program.
The program allows taxpayers to pay off any outstanding state tax liability and have penalties and interest forgiven. As of January 31st, the department had verified just over $237 million dollars in amnesty payments from 630-thousand taxpayers.
The co-author of a study on state tax amnesty programs says these types of programs keep cases out of the courtroom.
