More Illinois cities are exploring requirements for their police officers to live within city limits. Police chiefs in Elgin, Rockford, Kankakee and elsewhere think officers living where they patrol helps with relations.

Kankakee interim-chief Price Dumas has proposed an in-city program for officers. Incentives would pat officers rent for them to live in the city limits.

State law bans placing residency requirements on officers after they've already been hired. The city of Springfield approved residency last year for new city employees but the requirement for police was struck down in October during contract arbitration.
