CHICAGO (AP) -- About 190,000 ComEd customers were still without power hours after thunderstorms with winds up to 90 mph roared through the Chicago area.

ComEd spokeswoman Noelle Gaffney says about 20,000 of the original 210,000 customers who lost power had seen their power restored late Sunday afternoon. She says it is not clear how long it would take to restore power to the rest of the customers.

Most of the outages were reported in Chicago and the suburbs to the north of the city.

Storms with damaging winds, hail and rain swept through Northwest Indiana early Sunday afternoon, causing significant power outages, according to NIPSCO.

A severe thunderstorm warning has expired for Lake, Porter and northern Jasper counties, according to the National Weather Service. A line of severe thunderstorms producing quarter-size hail and winds in excess of 80 mph moved east through the area early Sunday afternoon.

At 3 p.m., NIPSCO was reporting more than 10,000 customers without power, including nearly 5,000 in Crown Point.
