Following warnings issued by local fire officials about high winds and an advisory not to burn yard debris on windy days, it happened anyway. A Pembroke Township tire Saturday involved up to 400 tires at a property site, according to Pembroke Fire District Chief Mark Baines.
Someone burning brush let the flames get out control. The fire spread to the tires, resulting in thick, black smoke covering much of eastern Kankakee County and parts of Iroquois County. No injury was reported. Firemen from several districts fought the flames in winds clocked at over 35 mph. Fire officials advise not to burn on such windy days.
