Tornadoes already way too popular in central-Illinois in 2026

Illinois is at the forfront, leading the nation this year when it comes to the number of tornadoes.  The (NWS) confirmed more than 80 tornadoes alread this year. And at least 18 of those touched down in Central Illinois on Friday.
NWS meteorologist Brett Borchardt says it's reason "to pay attention to the weather and take necessary steps for safety."  There are 84 tornadoes in Illinois confirmed in 2026. He is expecting that number to climb as damage surveys continue. It’s also the most tornadoes this early in the year in history.

Friday’s severe, tornadic posed a twist in activity, in that they formed so quickly.  And the high winds (70 mph) had warnings come so quickly; they were on the ground immediately.  Rotation came without warning.

So, say thank you to your local weather spotters who were johnnies on the spot to sound sirens and spread the word.
