Illinois State Police and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office are investigating a head-on crash that killed two drivers and injured one of the passengers Wednesday night near Thomasboro. An Urbana man and a Rantoul woman are both dead. Emergency crews answered the call at 7:45 pm on U.S. Route 45.

The 67-year-old man from Urbana was driving south in the northbound lanes, according to Coroner Duane Northrup. A 28-year-old Rantoul woman and her passenger were northbound . State Police report the Urbana man’s car crashed head-on into the Rantoul woman’s compact car.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The 29-year-old passenger from Champaign was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Coroner was withholding names pending notification of next of kin.
