Two Kankakee men killed in Amtrak crash near Gilman

Two Kankakee men died Sunday morning when an Amtrak train crashed into their delivery truck north of Gilman.

Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum identified the victims as 54-year-old Tony Campbell and 47-year-old Alexander Odzana. The men were westbound in a privately-owned box truck on 2000N Road when hit by the southbound train. The train was traveling at 70 mph.

No one on the train was injured.

Cheatum said the men may have been lost or distracted. The west side of the railroad crossing is a dead-end running up to I-57. The crossing is marked with train crossing signs.
An autopsy will be scheduled.

Sheriff’s Police, Gilman Fire, IMH Ambulance and railroad police were at the scene investigating.
