Nearly two-dozen fire departments from at least four MABAS divisions helped battle a massive fire Friday at Vanfab Inc. at Union Hill. Fire swept through a 7,000 square foot fabricating facility, destroying the building and offices. No one was injured. Thirty-two employees evacuated safely.
Officials believe a spark from a crane triggered the blaze that sent flames and billowing smoke into the sky. Some onlookers reported hearing explosions. The building destroyed occupied an entire block in the small, Kankakee County community. The original building was erected in 1896. The company plans to rebuild.
