Village of Woodland Village looks to find new revenues after referenda vote

The Village of Woodland, in Iroquois County, is hopeful retail liquor sales will generate some new business opportunity. Mayor Rick Grosvenor (Grove-ner) says the town’s legal people will look into attracting business, which would create some revenue for the small community.

A referendum vote (Tuesday ) lifts a Prohibition Ordinance that had been in place for years in Belmont Township. The ballot question ‘Shall the retail sale of alcoholic liquor be prohibited in Belmont Township ? ‘

685 voters said NO…while 297 voted YES.

Mayor Grosvenor said back in 1996 there was a business opportunity in Woodland to bring some sales tax revenue. But because liquor sales wasn’t allowed, the interest went away. Now, he says, maybe we can find someone else to generate some tax revenue.

The prohibition issue has appeared on the local ballot in years past and always voted on to keep it in place. This time, 70% of voters said ‘lift the ban.’
