A proposal to hike the Watseka sewer and water rates by 100% over the next eight-months isn’t setting well with some aldermen.

The City Council (Tuesday) took no action on a proposal to raise the rates 75% by October 1, then another 25% next May. A decision is likely next month.

The city leaders all realize a rate hike is a must, but “too much, too soon” seems to be the objection.

A formal vote was tabled (Tuesday) when City attorney Frank Simutis informed the council the matter had to be presented as an Ordinance, which wasn’t prepared for this meeting.

It’s clear, the rates will have to increase to meet demands on the water & sewer system for the future. In fact, Mayor Bob Harwood said the system’s taking a $200,000 hit this fiscal year.

The City Council is yet to decide whether the system, now operated and managed by ERH Enterprises, will continue as is, be sold, or the city take over the operation.
