— A 1st-degree murder charge has been filed in Iroquois County against a man accused in the death of his month-old son. 22-year-old Jason Ruiz of Watseka is also charged with aggravated battery in the case, according to Iroquois County Sheriff’s Police.

A press release from the County Sheriff’s Department states it was last Friday (April 10) when the Watseka Fire Department and EMS were dispatched to a home in rural Watseka in reference to a baby that wasn’t breathing. The infant was transported to Iroquois Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
There, one-month-old Jace Ruiz died at the Chicago hospital Monday 4/13.

The Sheriff’s Office said the baby’s father, 22-year-old Jason Ruiz, was arrested in Chicago.

“The investigation remains active,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.  “Out of respect for the ongoing legal proceedings and the victim’s family, no additional information will be released at this time.”
