American flags are proudly displayed along Illinois Routes 1 and 24 for Wednesday’s July 4th celebration. And Mayor John Allhands is pretty proud of the community’s show of support.
“This starts from the west bridge on Route 24 and runs thru town to the east junction of Route 1/24. The flag display also extends from the Route 1 bridge north of town to the west junction,” Allhands said. “The flags are on both sides of the roads.”
The proud display also finds many residential homes displaying the U.S. flag.
Volunteers were on a mission Saturday to get the flags in order for the holiday.
The city purchased two thousand American flags. The mayor said alderwoman Mona Ullfers suggested the city step it up. More discussion led to several aldermen, city employees, business-people and Police Chief Jeremy Douglas to get involved and get the flags lined up.
Several citizens also helped as did local FFA members.
The flags will remain on display thru July 9th.
“It was great to have cars and semis honking at us, saluting and giving thumbs up as we were doing it,” Allhands said.
