Watseka and Iroquois County proudly bear names that carry some historical significance. And – Monday, an audience gathered to dedicate a mural, on display for all to see – Watchekee, a woman who brings the city its name.
The Watchekee mural appears on the side of a building housing The Zone – downtown, where the Watseka Kiwanis club dedicated an attractive mural to recognize the city namesake. Watchekee’s great, great grandson (Dr. George Godfrey) hopes his kin’s kindness will add sparkle to the community.

The Potowatomi woman struggled thru life, but helped early settlers during a severe winter in 1830 in what’s is today Iroquois County. But history now reveals Watchekee was not the Princess many thought for so long. Nonetheless, Dr. Godfrey says it’s about her kindness. Artist Bekki Canine was helped by the Tippecanoe Arts Federation in creating the mural. Bekki spent 5 days working with WCHS art students to create the painting. She adds, most of her work is about symbolism, with a focus on how people treat each other and the environment.

Kiwanis President Janice Lubben said the club’s involvement is about community and kindness.
