Watseka officials to talk about rising insurance rates

The Watseka City Council is meeting in special session next week (Tuesday 7/12) to find solutions to increased rates for health insurance.

The employee health insurance premium is being bumped up 50% by current provider Humana. The premium will increase from $12,000 to $19,000. The current policy expires July 31st, so urgent action is needed to allow time for any new arrangement to take shape.

Mayor Bob Harwood said it's a tough pill to swallow. Decision must be made. Five other insurance carriers have submitted proposals for city leaders to consider.

Twenty-one city employees are covered 100% under the current policy.

The special meeting is 8 pm Tuesday at city hall.
