A group of “Yellow Ribbon” flight veterans returned home from Washington, D.C. Monday evening after a one-day trip to see military war memorials in the nation’s capital.
It was Greater Lafayette’s 17th Honor Flight. The “Yellow Ribbon” flight is for Vietnam Veterans only.

Gilbert Fanning of Watseka was among the honored veterans onboard. Chaperoning Mr. Fanning was his daughter, Lacie Fanning.

Gilbert told 94.1 WGFA News “it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.” He is a retired Army veteran serving in Vietnam as an Artillery Ammo truck driver.

Mr. Fanning and his wife, Rosemary, reside in Watseka. He’s a lifetime member of the VFW.

Gilbert was honored to be the Grand Marshall of the July 4th Parade this past summer in the City of Watseka.

The Honor Flight took the veterans to the National World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial and the Korean War Memorial.

The group also got to meet former Indiana Governor and now-V-P Mike Pence.

The Lafayette community greeted the veterans on their return at Purdue University Airport.
