Thirsty crops are beggin' for rain. A lack of rain is causing concern among most area farmers in Illinois and Indiana. According to the latest Drought Monitor, nearly all of Illinois was rated abnormally dry to being in drought. Meteorologist Anthony Peoples (WAND) says conditions are worsening with the latest weather pattern affecting the state.
Gary Schnitkey, a University of Illinois professor of farm management told a Champaign TV station that corn and soybean crops could deteriorate if drought conditions continue to worsen.
In the latest USDA Illinois crop progress and condition report, 18 percent of soybeans were considered very poor to poor, while 20 percent of the corn crop was considered very poor to poor.
