Snowfall is coming into play on area roadways. The NWS says the snow may accumulatre to affect several routes wiuth 1 - 3 inches. Snow plows are treating roads and IDOT urges drivers to be aware of changing road conditions. Visibility could be a factor in rural areas.
A winter storm is targeting portions of the lower Midwest between Saturday night and Monday evening, bringing travel impacts directly to portions of central and southeast Illinois. Champaign, Vermilion and Edgar and Douglas Counties are immediate areas that pose concern. The NWS has pinpoined areas where motorists should be aware.
* WHAT…Heavy snow of at least 6 inches is likely (greater than 60% chance). Additionally, a narrow band of accumulating flat ice of at least one-tenth of an inch is possible (greater than 40% chance). Blustery north winds will occasionally gust between 20-30 mph, potentially leading to blowing and drifting snow across East-West highways, as well as sporadic power outages.
* WHERE…Heavy snow across portions of central, east central, southeast, and west central Illinois. Ice accumulations confined to areas along and south of Interstate 70.
* WHEN…From late Saturday night through Monday morning.
* IMPACTS…Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday morning commute.
