Woodland Fire Chief, wife die in Iroquois County car accident

Another tragedy in Iroquois County. A weekend crash claimed the lives of a Woodland couple. Two other local teenagers were air-lifted for medical care following a two-vehicle crash early Saturday southeast of Crescent City.

Pronounced dead at the scene was 55-year-old Dominic Smith and his wife, Kimberly Smith. Dominic was the Woodland Fire Chief and a veteran member of the Champaign Fire Department.

The Smith vehicle was hit by a car driven by 18-year-old Blake Martell of Watseka. Martell and his 17-year-old passenger are hospitalized at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Iroquois County Sheriff’s Police are investigating the crash, which happened west of Woodland at County Roads 1500E and 1400N. Police report Martell’s southbound car disobeyed a stop sign, colliding with Smith’s eastbound vehicle.
Both vehicles left the roadway, all four victims ejected.

Crescent City Fire and EMS, the Iroquois County Coroner’s Office and County Animal Control assisted at the scene. Two pets in the Smith vehicle were also lost.
