Illinois communities prepare for pot sales

Several municipal and county government bodies are getting their ordinances in place for compliance with Illinois’ new law for the sale of recreational marijuana. Deadlines are approaching in Springfield for the Department of Revenue. Sample ordinances circulated statewide to help guide local officials.

Communities have options to approve or prohibit cannabis sales. But most agree, it’s hard to turn away the potential revenue while your neighbor-town gains the benefits.

Local laws already on the books could be altered to help control where the cannabis dispensaries can be located. It’s the issue of within the town boundaries vs un-incorporated areas --- as schools, churches, day-care facilities and parks and residential sites come into play.

Zoning and Planning officials tend to believe tightening existing laws help control where the dispensaries can be located.
