Wrongful-death lawsuit filed in 2018 fatality at Vermilion County Jail

A Peoria-based attorney has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Vermilion County officials for the death of an inmate in the county jail. Jamie Moore of Hoopeston was found dead in a cell August 1, 2018. Moore’s daughter is the plaintiff in the case. The 9-count lawsuit brings allegations against Vermilion County, Sheriff Pat Hartshorn and six sheriff deputies. The News-Gazette reports the suit alleges officers used excessive force and denied Moore required medical attention.

Moore’s death was investigated by Illinois State Police. The lawsuit alleges the correctional officers knew about Moore’s medical condition,
