Mahomet aquifer protection plan now law

Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the much-talked-about plan to stop carbon capture and sequestration near the Mahomet aquifer.  It takes effect January 1st.  Senate Bill 1723 passed the House 91-19, then received unanimous support in the Senate.  The Mahomet aquifer is the sole source of water supply for some 800,000 people across Central Illinois.

Senator Chapin Rose says this is "very partisan, and it's for the right reason because water is not political."

The Law will allow One Earth Energy to continue its construction of a carbon sequestration plant.  The Mahomet deal put a stop to most of the opposition to the plan. Community advocates had raised concerns that carbon sequestration piping filled with carbon dioxide could potentially leak and contaminate the aquifer.

The Illinois Manufacturers' Association had been urging Gov. Pritizker to veto the plan, arguing carbon capture and sequestration is a safe and proven technology that's key to maintaining economic growth and decarbonization goals.
