Kankakee County's Zoning Board of Appeals is reviewing an application for a medical marijuana greenhouse. An August 21st meeting is planned. A company in Frankfort, with ties to a Colorado medical marijuana operation, is trying to start a pot farm in western Kankakee County.

Grand Prairie Farms LLC, has submitted an application for a special use permit in a facility in Pilot Township. (It would occupy eight acres of the former Pilot Battery plant site).

An indoor growing operation could begin by spring 2015, if the plan falls in place.

The full county board approval is needed. And, the company would need state approval as well.
Medical marijuana dispensaries will be licensed through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations.

Under state law, only a limited number of cultivation centers can operate throughout the state.
