Law enforcement agencies are advising the public about scams. And with Valentine's Day approaching, love-scams become more popular. The Illinois Attorney General's Office is joining police in making sure citizens are aware of con-artists after your money. Citizens need to know who you're dealing with before sending money to individuals you don't know.
Police Departments and prosecutors urge the public to be vigilant against scams where individuals are played into sending money to unknown people through various online and phone-based methods. Often times, cases involve fabricated stories of emergencies, investment opportunities, or fake online relationships. People should be aware of scammers posing as a relative in distress, posing as a government official, or demanding payment for items you didn't purchase or order.
Protect yourself by never giving out personal information or banking account numbers. Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person and verified their identity.
Report suspicious activity to your local law enforcement. If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, contact your local police department to file a report.
