Warm water siphons planned to control ice jams

The Will County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is planning to open a warm water siphon from the Dresden Energy Center cooling lake to mitigate ice jams on the Kankakee River.  Officials say the process is a proactive step to head off potential ice jams forming on the waterway.  The NWS forecast is for warmer conditions and rainfall leading to rapid rises in the river.

The obstructed ice can cause flooding to occur as the river flow is obstructed.  The Kankakee River at Momence has also been monitored, with minor flooding posing a threat to those people living in low-lying areas.
