Finding a new police chief in Watseka has been a struggle. But the City Council (Tuesday) made its decision to appoint at least a temporary person, effective March 1.
City Police Lt. Mark Harris will assume the chief’s post when current chief Jeremy Douglas retires. Douglas has agreed to stay on board until March 1 to help with the transition. Harris has been with the department for more than a handful of years. He’s the handler for K-9 Tucker. Harris has also managed the patrol-division.
The City Council came out of executive session (Tuesday night) to announce the interim move in favor of Harris.
A recent search committee for a new chief ran out of options when three interviewed-candidates all withdrew from consideration. Financial discussions were not disclosed, but there was some concern among the candidates --- in that a new mayor has the option of making his/her own appointment. The City voters will choose a new mayor April 1.
