An Illinois State Police trooper has died after being struck by a passing vehicle while clearing debris from the road on southbound I-55 Monday night.

The Illinois State Police report that 35-year-old Trooper Clay M. Carns was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet, where he later died from his injuries. Carns had served with the Illinois State Police for 11 years. The crash occurred at approximately 9:42 p.m. near Channahon. The ISP says Carns is survived by his wife, two children, and his parents.

The crash remains under investigation.
