Benton County Deputy Injured in Crash

Indiana law enforcement authorities are seeking help from the public in the investigation of a crash Saturday that injured a Benton County deputy. Deputy Julie Marsh was treated at a Lafayette hospital . Her injuries were not life-threatening.

It was about 4 pm (Saturday) when Deputy Marsh (herself) radioed the Dispatch Center regarding a single-vehicle crash. Reports stated the deputy was monitoring traffic on U.S. 52 near County Road 500 S when a light-blue vehicle with Illinois license plate was clocked at 87 mph in 60 mph zone. Police reports stated Deputy Marsh pursued the speeding vehicle, with emergency lights and siren activated. In attempting to pull the speeding vehicle over, another unknown vehicle traveling in the right lane suddenly moved to the Left lane – forcing Deputy Marsh to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

Deputy Marsh was able to avoid the vehicle by steering her marked patrol SUV into the median. In the process, the patrol SUV hit a culvert, went airborne and landed in the median.

Police reported the vehicle that caused the crash and the light blue car with Illinois plates that was being stopped for speeding, both left the scene. Anyone that witnessed the crash and could help identify either of the vehicles that left the scene are asked to contact the Benton County Sheriffs Office at 765-884-0080 or the Indiana State Police at 765-567-2125.
