During the evening hours of Sunday, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Iroquois County, IL Sheriff’s Office.  The details of that incident will not be released by Newton County as the Illinois State Police are leading that investigation.

As a result of this incident, Newton County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Brandon Schreiber (5 year veteran) was shot by the suspect.  Corporal Schreiber was initially taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital when he was then flown to the Carle Trauma Center.  He remains in critical condition.

The Schreiber family has requested privacy as they try to process this tragedy.  Anyone that would like to send a card can mail it to:
