A 68-year-old female was killed late Wednesday afternoon in a six-vehicle, chain-reaction crash on Interstate 55 near Wilmington.
Illinois State police report the crash happened about 4:30 pm north of North River Road, in a construction area where traffic had slowed.
A semi truck ran into the vehicle ahead of it, causing a chain-reaction collision that involved a total of three semi trucks and three cars.
The female driver of the first passenger vehicle that was struck was pronounced dead at the scene.
The northbound lanes of I-55 were closed for almost five hours as police investigated.
The Will County Coroner’s office was holding information pending family notification.
