The Livingston County Board is considering a request to overturn the county's 16-year ban on tattoo businesses.
The ban was approved in November 1996 following a 1995 incident involving a Pontiac resident who tattooed three adolescents using the same needle.
A tattoo artist says "It's a form of art and tattoos are not frowned upon. It's a good way to attract business and bring in revenue to the county."
The tattooist wants to open a business in Pontiac. The city's zoning ordinances are also being reviewed.
The Livingston County Public Health Department recommends keeping the ban. The health department says it doesn't have trained personnel to do regular inspections and Any inspections would have to be conducted by a neighboring county or the state.
The county will notify all Livingston County villages and towns that the board will consider a related resolution next Thursday.
