Gomez wins 52nd WGFA Iroquois County Spelling Contest

Iroquois West 6th grader Noah Gomez was crowned the 2018 spelling champion today (Friday). He bested Crescent City 5th grader Kobie Hendershot in a long, back-and-forth marathon event at the Unit Nine Administrative Center in Watseka.

The contest aired on 94.1 WGFA with morning host Don Elliott presenting the words to the contestants.

WGFA Radio and the Ford-Iroquois Retired Teachers Association sponsor the annual event.

NoahGomex correctly spelling “marrow” (like in bone marrow) and then” cardiac” to earn the title.

The final two spellers took stabs at 17 different words in the final round before Gomez won the competition.

Third place went to Claire Francis of the Milford Grade School. Iroquois West’s Dean Clendenen finished 4th. The 5th place finisher was Michaela (Muh-Kay-luh) Gibbs of St. Paul’s Lutheran.
